An original hand drawn paper doll.
Becky Thatcher was Tom Sawyer’s childhood playmate and love interest in Mark Twain’s book,The Adventure of Tom Sawyer, written in 1876. Becky lived in a big white house on the nice side of town. Tom was walking by the house one day, when he saw her for the first time. He was in love with her at once as the class distinctions between the two of them did not seem to matter. At first Becky played like she was not interested in Tom, but eventually she was taken with his charms and they agreed to get married when they were old enough. As Tom and Becky were around twelve to thirteen years old in the novel, the reader is left wondering what happened between the two of them as the realities of life and class structure may have interfered.
This hand drawn black and white Becky Thatcher paper doll was first published in Doll World’s Christmas Annual in the early 1980s. Becky was published on newsprint paper and was meant to be cut out and colored with crayons or colored pencils. Becky’s dresses are typical of the late Reconstruction Period during which the United States was healing after the Civil War. The years between 1865 to 1877 are considered the Reconstruction Period. The year 1876 also falls during the reign of Queen Victoria, so Becky’s clothes can be called Victorian as well. Queen Victoria reigned for a long time, from 1837 to 1901.
